THE HIGHLIGHTS
Wiawaka Center for Women enriches, inspires and celebrates the growth of women through unique and relevant programming at a natural and peaceful setting.
Wiawaka is a 501 ( c ) 3 charitable organization dedicated to enriching the lives of women. We do charge for services however, much of our programming is funded through donations.
Wiawaka was created by and for women in 1903. It is the oldest and longest continuously operating retreat for women in America. We are proud to honor our tradition and embrace the future as we work to maintain this historic property and fulfill the mission set forth by our founder, Mary Fuller.
Ms. Mary Fuller was the daughter of a Troy industrialist. She used her position and wealth to help the young, mainly immigrant, female textile workers employed as shirt collar makers, laundresses and millworkers in Troy and Cohoes. The official transfer of our Wiawaka property is from Katrina Trask to Mary Fuller and was marked by the exchange of one dollar and a bouquet of flowers.
From the start, Mary Fuller enlisted the help of other socially progressive benefactresses to raise funds to support Wiawaka’s activities and endow “scholarships” for holidays. Miss Fuller remained committed and involved with Wiawaka until her death in 1943.
